My graduation gift from Kevin. Next stop, everywhere.

I wish I was getting an MFA in Watching YouTube Videos of Harry Potter Singing and Dancing, because it’s the only thing I feel qualified for anymore.
So I met with my manuscript committee chair on Monday to talk about the first fifty pages of my manuscript, and she was kind of like, “These stories are good but also not good,” and I was like, “Ugh, I know.” She said what everyone’s always said, which is that she doesn’t know what’s at the heart of them. I told her the thing one of her former colleagues told me—“Don’t use your wit to keep the audience at arm’s length.” But she said no; it’s not coldness, just maybe too many things going on, and some of them ringing false. And I was like, “Ugh, I know.” She picked one about a plane crash and asked what it was about and I kind of just shrugged for a full minute and then she asked why I wrote it, and then suddenly I was talking about my fear of death a lot and taking notes about my fear of death and then I was like, oh, this is why people always talk about writing being hard. Anyway, see you in a few months; I’m going to be busy tapping into the core of my Self until this program’s over. Great story, Katie.
