I Wrote A YA Novel and Now It Is Shortlisted for a Prize

I am so beyond thrilled to be able to announce that my novel, Vivian Versus the Apocalypse, has been shortlisted for the Young Writers Prize, sponsored by Hot Key Books and The Guardian. Check it!

I find out in the spring whether or not I’ve won, but honestly, no matter what happens next: I am just so happy I was able to write this book, and so hopeful that you guys will one day have the opportunity to read it. It contains smart teenage girls, lots of opinions, and probably too much cursing. I think you’ll really like it.

Special thanks to Neil Gaiman, without whose Tumblr post I would never have known about this contest; and to Kevin Tassini, my one true love, who saw Neil Gaiman’s Tumblr post and said, “Uh, you’re going to do that, right?” and then brought me many meals and glasses of water as I furiously tried to finish, ensuring that I did not die in the attempt.

Since I found out last week, I have become more and more skeptical that this world in an actual place in which I exist, and not some kind of virtual reality whose sole design is to implant dreams in my pseudo-consciousness and then make those dreams come “true.” If it’s the latter, I’ll take it! Just please don’t tell me, because I’m really enjoying living in it.
